If I Were Debt Free…#84
Leave a legacy
I’m not the only one becoming debt free. My wife and children are as well. It’s been a joy having the kids, even three year old Clara, ask “Are we debt free yet?” We’ve tried to explain what debt is, and why we are getting out of it. I think they grasp the general idea. They at least understand it is a good thing, and it has it’s rewards, our trip to Colorado being one of the biggest. The other night we didn’t have dinner ready on time and we needed to go grocery shopping. We chose Costco as the lesser of all evils for eating out, but the kids asked, “Won’t this make it take longer to get out of debt?!” It was awesome to hear that. They totally understand that if we try to enjoy luxuries like eating out, that it’s going to take us longer to get out of debt. That makes me want to try harder and stay on focus.
It also gives me a desire to teach them continually about how to use money. I don’t want them to be in their twenties, and starting over where I’ve already been. While they will make mistakes, I’d like them to be new ones. I want them to be able to start where I left off, not from where I started. I will do my best to leave a strong foundation for them to build on, so we can forever change the family tree and impact the world.

Have you ever had that nagging feeling that there was something more to do with your life? I don’t remember exactly when it started for me...

This is a tool your children will reflect on later in life and be thankful to you and your wife. To educate our children about financial responsibility is such an important part of equipping them for life. The excitement you express in your post, about the kids getting it, is a great experience isn’t it?
Keep up the great posts.
Awesome awesome awesome Nate!!
I think it’s so cool that the kids are getting as excited as we are and understanding what it really means :D
