Turkey Outreach
Ah, nothing like 6 AM on a Saturday morning. You say the last time you saw 6 on a Saturday is when you stayed up all night and went to bed at 6:02? Ok, I guess I’m one of those weird early risers. But this morning, I had a good reason to be awake that early. We were helping out at the Turkey Outreach! I had to get the troops moving.
When we arrived at the church (slightly behind schedule, but all in once piece and still civil), we were surprised to find the parking lot packed! This was our first time serving at the Turkey Outreach, and I doubt it will be our last. What an awesome opportunity to serve! We joined the hundreds of others of volunteers on the lower level of the parking garage. There were four or five full assembly lines going, stuffing boxes with a full Thanksgiving Dinner. We jumped in at the bread which was the last thing to go in the box. James and Morgan were troopers, despite it being early and cold. They packed food boxes, and disassembled trash boxes with gusto.
We were thankful to play a small role in this, knowing all this food was going to go to people who may not otherwise be eating on Thanksgiving. I was so glad we could serve and learn as a family. Next year I hope to take at least the older two to the distribution centers later in the day.
I will post some pictures if I get my hands on some.
Have you ever had that nagging feeling that there was something more to do with your life? I don’t remember exactly when it started for me...
